Clear and Metal Braces
The majority of teenagers are best treated with braces, both clear and metal. Braces are the best option for most teenagers due to the fact that they offer more control with both straightening the teeth and correcting the bite. During the consultation, Dr. Buchwald will teach you and your parent(s) all about the braces and how they will be used to create the perfect smile for you.
Invisalign
An increasing number of teenage patients are choosing to be treated with Invisalign. Invisalign is a system of clear, removable trays that Dr. Buchwald personally designs and sets up for each patient. Dr. Buchwald will discuss with you at your consultation if this would be a good treatment option for your particular case.

At Buchwald Orthodontics, we want our teen patients to have the information they need to feel happy and confident when they visit us. That’s why we’ve provided the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about braces for teens in Frisco and Prosper. Read on to learn more!
How Long Will I Have to Wear Braces?
Because no two smiles are the same, it’s difficult to provide a precise treatment time estimate. Your oral health, commitment to the treatment plan, and degree of misalignment are just some of the factors that can impact your overall treatment time. For those with severe misalignment, treatment with braces can take at least two years. If you have mild misalignment, and elect for Invisalign as a solution, treatment could take between 6 and 18 months. It will all depend on the factors listed above. The best way to know is to request an appointment!
Do Braces Hurt?
One of the most common questions we get from younger patients is about pain and discomfort. Will the treatment hurt? Traditional braces, Invisalign, and other orthodontic systems work by gradually shifting the teeth into a straight position over time. While this movement may cause some slight discomfort initially, you will quickly become used to life with orthodontics. That said, Invisalign is usually a more comfortable option because it’s designed with smooth plastic, avoiding the possibility of metal brackets and wires irritating the inside of your mouth.
Will I Miss School Because of My Braces?
We know you may WANT to skip some class, but our orthodontic solutions are so convenient that you can go back to school on the same day your treatment begins. Of course, there will be various checkup appointments throughout the smile straightening process, but these visits are usually quick and easy. Parents can feel great about helping their kids achieve healthy and beautiful smiles without missing out on opportunities for learning.
Can I Still Play Sports with Braces?
There is no need to worry about being able to participate in your regular sports and activities. Just be sure to wear a mouthguard during sports, especially physical ones. This can help you avoid cutting or hurting the inside of your mouth. Additionally, if you play an instrument, you should be able to hit all your favorite notes after a slight adjustment period. You can still have fun while straightening your teeth!
What Happens When Treatment is Over?
We know you’re probably counting down the days until your smile is straight and free of any braces or clear aligners, but your treatment is not over just yet. In order to protect the investment in your smile as well as your beautiful results, it’s vital to wear a retainer. This appliance should be worn daily, eventually switching to nighttime use only. This will ensure that your straight teeth stay in their newly aligned position!
